Projects on the map: bio-CCUS & biochar

The map shows completed and planned bio-CCUS and biochar investments, as well as carbon dioxide treatment projects and terminals. We will update the map as new projects are announced by companies and information becomes available. You can also inform us of new projects so that they can be added to the map(viestinta@bioenergia.fi). The map has been produced by Bioenergialehti in cooperation with Bioenergia ry. The map is based on public data collected by Bioenergia ry and is updated monthly. Please note that Bioenergia ry is not responsible for any errors or delays in updating the data.

The map data can be downloaded as an Excel file here.

Glossary

BECCS (Bioenergy Carbon Capture and Storage): Carbon capture and storage combined with bioenergy production.

BECCU (Bioenergy Carbon Capture and Utilization): Carbon capture and utilisation combined with bioenergy production.

BECCUS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture, Storage and Utilization): Carbon capture and utilisation or storage combined with bioenergy production.

Bio-CCUS (Carbon Capture, Storage and Utilization): Capture, use and storage of biogenic carbon dioxide. Compared to the term BECCS, Bio-CCS can also refer, for example, to carbon capture in the forest industry without bioenergy production.

Biochar: A porous and carbonaceous substance produced by pyrolysis of biomass. Biochar is a negative emissions technology (NET) because it can store the carbon from the biomass used as feedstock in the soil or other applications for hundreds or even thousands of years.
