The Bio-CO2 Use and Removal 2025 event, taking place on May 6, 2025, in Helsinki, will explore the latest developments in technological carbon removal and the innovative use of biogenic CO2 in products. It will offer valuable insights into the role of these solutions in climate policy and the essential steps needed to turn them into reality in actual projects.

The event will begin with a keynote by Finland’s Minister of the Environment and Climate, Sari Multala, who will discuss perspectives from Finland’s energy and climate strategy and highlight future opportunities in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). The morning program will also feature international insights. Erik Rylander, Head of Carbon Removal at Stockholm Exergi, will provide updates on Europe’s largest technical carbon removal project, supported by the Swedish Energy Agency. Travis Brookson, Director of Global Storage Partnerships and European Business Development at Svante, will present an overview of CCUS prospects in North America. Representatives from European CCUS organizations will also discuss key actions needed to accelerate the sector’s growth.

– As fossil fuel use declines rapidly, the role of carbon sinks in climate policy is becoming increasingly important. Alongside natural carbon sinks, the EU will need at least tens of millions of tonnes of technical carbon sinks by 2040 to meet the goals set by the current Commission. Additionally, carbon capture and utilization are essential for eliminating remaining fossil emissions. This presents exciting opportunities for Finnish companies, which we aim to highlight at this event, says Harri Laurikka, CEO of the Bioenergy Association of Finland.

In the afternoon, parallel sessions will explore the status of CCUS and biochar projects in Finland and abroad, breakthrough technologies, and carbon dioxide infrastructure and logistics. Attendees will also learn about the utilization of carbon dioxide in products and storage solutions.

Bio-CO2 Use and Removal 2025 provides an excellent platform for discussion and networking among stakeholders involved in capturing, utilizing, transporting, and storing bio-based carbon dioxide. The event, held in English, welcomes both Finnish and international participants. This is the second edition of the event.

The event is organized by the Bioenergy Association of Finland (Bioenergia ry) in collaboration with VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Finnish Energy. Partners include Vantaan Energia, Norsk e-Fuel, Sumitomo SHI/WG, and Hydrogen Cluster Finland. Media partners are Bioenergy Europe, the World Bioenergy Association, CO2 Value Europe, Bioenergy International, and Hydrogen Cluster Finland.

Registration for the Bio-CO2 Use and Removal 2025 event is now open on the event website. Welcome to join!
